Protective measures by the Ministry of Health cancel flights from South Korea and northern Italy due to the spread of the coronavirus
The Ministry of Health has issued three emergency protective measures in relation to a resolution passed by the National Security Council on Monday, 2 March. Two of these cancel direct flights from the Korean Republic and from all airports in the Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont, Lombardy and Veneto regions in the Italian Republic to all airports in the Czech Republic starting on 5 March. The third measure prohibits spectators at the Biathlon World Cup in Nové Město na Moravě. The objective of the measures is to create conditions to restrict the spread of this disease.
The reason for the cancellation of flights from the Korean Republic and northern Italy to the Czech Republic is the adverse development of the epidemiological situation in the occurrence of the COVID-19 disease caused by the novel coronavirus in these countries. “We are monitoring how the number of people infected is increasing exponentially on a daily basis in the Korean Republic and regions of northern Italy. Occurrence of the disease has already been confirmed in over 4,300 patients in South Korea. The number of people infected in Italy has increased over the past few days from just a few to the current 2,000 patients. This is why we have decided to cancel flights from these regions. The situation requires this measure,” said Adam Vojtěch, Minister of Health. The protective measure relating to the Korean Republic is in force until further notice, while the measure relating to northern Italy is in force for the next 14 days.
In view of the gradual spread of the coronavirus disease in neighbouring or nearby countries such as Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Croatia, and the assumption that thousands of visitors could be arriving from these countries, a fact which could lead to the coronavirus spreading significantly throughout the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Health has decided, after discussion of this measure by the National Security Council, to prohibit spectators at the Biathlon World Cup in Nové Město na Moravě. “I am very sorry about this news, in particular for all biathlon fans. We considered the issue very thoroughly and have decided that the risk of exposing thousands of visitors and the general public is too great,” added the minister.
